Nailsea School, Bristol

As a flagship project within the Building Schools for the Future programme, Nailsea incorporates bold new thinking about how a school should be designed. This approach extended to giving students and staff an active voice in the design process – including selection of colours and textures for the floors.

Burmatex provided samples of products, patterns and colourways for students and staff to consider and discuss. From the feedback and suggestions, the design team were then able to develop an overall scheme with chosen colours and patterns in classrooms, corridors, breakout and recreation areas. Combining standard tile colours with bespoke colours manufactured to order, the 7,500m2 project was completed in 9 weeks.

The response from students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive – a practical demonstration of the school’s ethos of creating learning environments where students can express themselves and excel.
