In this post we are detailing the inspiration behind the colour names of osaka®. Refreshed in 2023, the palette has twelve colours ranging from soft neutrals to brighter pastel pops. The design of osaka® is inspired by a map of the city, therefore, the colour names are all Japanese words.

hikari and sesame

Meaning light, hikari was introduced to the osaka® collection as a warmer light greige option.

A comfortable beige option, sesame is named after the sesame seed garnish that is found on many Japanese foods.

kumo, arashi, gingko

kumo is a rich dark grey option, meaning cloud.

A pure medium grey from the original 2018 palette of osaka®, arashi means storm.

gingko is inspired by the bright yellow leaves on gingko trees that are native to Japan.

kawa, mochi, kori

A bright pastel inspired aqua green, kawa means river.

Every year in the middle of September, London becomes alive with the design community during the London design festival; a week long celebration of colour, pattern, function and form. The event, that seems to grow and grow each year, is a key place to spot emerging trends. Here are our favourite finds from this years festival, as seen on social media.

Raw and Natural Materials

Whether it’s concrete, grass grown fibers, paper or natural dyes; the abundance of natural and raw materials was felt during this years design festival.

Paper thin material

A smaller trend but spotted nonetheless, paper thin material, used specifically in lighting or sculpture. The lights were paired with warm or cool bulbs, creating floating, cloudlike lamps and features. The installation art mimicked movement through layers of thin materials.

For carpet tile designers, yellow is the perfect pop of colour, working to contrast against cool greys or to add more warmth and intrigue to warmer schemes. The increased popularity in yellow for home decor is likely to impact commercial design too. “Google searches for ‘sunny yellow paint’ has risen by 250 per cent in the UK over the past year” – MSN.
