SHOW

Last week we visited the Architect @ Work trade show, which was exhibiting for two days in Olympia, London. The show itself is elegant and well curated, with a beautiful range of interior and architecture products on display. It is a fantastic place to meet like-minded industry professionals, catch up on trends and even buy a book or two at the pop-up RIBA book shop. It also has well-considered opening hours of 13:00 – 20:00…great for busy workers wanting to pop in after a full day in the office. With free drinks and nibbles, as well as free entry if you pre-register, this as a fantastic event not to be missed for architects, designers and specifiers.

2016 FOCUS: WOOD AND ARCHITECTURE

As wood was a focus for the show this year, there was an inspiring collection of ‘wood curiosities’ displayed by SCIN Gallery, Materials Library and Resource. The collection, called ‘Growth Rings’ was split into three different collections:

Collection 01: DNA

Collection 02: Skeuomorphism

Collection 03: Mathematics – Addition + Subtraction

Our favourites of the ‘Growth Rings’ showcase included: folding wood ‘Foldtex Basic or Foldtex Spezial’  by FOLDTEX, wood with embedded fibre optics ‘Mahogani Sipo’ by LUMINOSO, flexible wood ‘Sinta’ by DUKTA and dyed wood ‘Alpilignum’ by ALPI.

1 Foldtex Basic, Foldtex

2 Mahogani Sipo, Luminoso

3 Sinta, Dukta

4 Alpilignum, Alpi

The natural theme of the show, seemed to be reflected in the colour and patterns used across the variety of different products that were on display. There seemed to be an abundance of greys and sandy desert tones, with the stunning application of metallic surfaces. SCIN Gallery exhibited ‘Sp. Italian Plank’ by VOICETEC and HAVER & BOECKER displayed an attractive array of woven metal, architectural mesh samples.  In terms of pattern, the bold geometrics that have been popular in recent trends seemed to have evolved into more organic, delicate patterns, which felt slightly less imposing and more comfortable for human surroundings.

5 Italian Plank, Voicetec

6 Textura Wire Cloth, Haver and Boecker

7 Ecran, Bisson Bruneel

8 EC Wall, Emil Ceramica
