Following on from the post ‘Carpet Plank Installation Options’ on 23.02.2016, in which some of the different installation options for burmatex® carpet plank were visualised, we wanted to share some of the ways in which you can use burmatex® carpet plank and tile together in one floor design. As much as burmatex® carpet planks look great on their own, they have been designed so they can easily be used together with our tiles and therefore we want to share some of the great installation options that we have put together in our studio.

A few weeks ago, it was the first time I attended a great event organised by Creative Networks which is “Leeds College of Art’s major professional events programme. It consists of talks from a diverse group of high profile speakers from across the creative industries to entertain, challenge and make us think”.

At Burmatex design studio, we love to have diverse sources of inspiration and keep an eye on what is happening in the various creative communities.

The subject this week was about the future of colours and applications. Three unique and high quality presentations have been delivered by internationally recognised textile designer Kit Miles, highly talented light researcher Dennis Parren and inspiring experimental duo Blond and Bieber.

This fine selection of speakers made the event very interesting and highly informative giving a forward thinking overview on colours and future applications.

Pecha Kucha is a relatively new way of presenting ideas and information. Specifically designed for more creative industries and minds, it is a way of presenting and absorbing information quickly. The word pecha kucha means chit chat in Japanese and this format of presenting originated in Tokyo in 2003 by Klein Dytham architecture.

The format of a pecha kucha is that you have 20 images, each spoken about for 20 seconds. This means you have to focus and condense the information you want to give and also that you hold a more captivated audience.

With the rise of social media and E communication, it is easy to become overwhelmed by information. Pecha Kucha talks give an opportunity to learn about subjects quickly and efficiently, with any more in depth research something you yourself can be proactive in doing. They are also highly inspiring with a focus on visuals as well

HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY OFFICE ENVIRONMENT?

Unless you work at the likes of Google or Facebook, the word ‘office’ probably won’t fill you with excitement (unless recently refurbished by Whitespace of course). Being indoors under artificial light for up to eight hours a day can be draining even for the most dedicated employees. Yet, numerous studies have revealed that people are happier if they actually like their working environment, so why aren’t business owners doing more about it? Probably because they don’t know where to start…

So, how do you improve your current space? Creating an area that places emphasis on well-being is key!

Believe it or not sitting at a desk all day doesn’t always get the best out of people.  Try having fewer desks than people! This supports activity based working, where staff get to choose their workspace based on the tasks they are undertaking.

Office ergonomics

I have been unable to throw this away, despite knowing I would never wear it. What drew the owner to buy it, or was it a gift?

As a designer of carpet tiles, mentally converting images into 500mm x 500mm squares is something that can happen without intention and this is what happened here.

Once the thought was there, I put small samples of lateral and balance greyscale together to replicate the hound’s tooth-type effect.

This isn’t typically used as a large scale flooring option, but swapping each small piece of carpet for a full 500mm x 500mm tile creates a straight forward module of 21 tiles. At 3.5m wide, each ‘tooth’ is offset over the large space indicated above.
