As a Yorkshire based company, ® has been proud to provide the carpet for the newly opened Wakefield Council building, Wakefield One on Burton Street, WF1 2DD.

The Opening of Wakefield One represented a significant milestone for the Wakefield Merchant Gate Masterplan, a major regeneration project spanning 17 acres of vacant land between Wakefield Westgate railway station and the city centre.

Wakefield One combines a diverse programme of uses into a new model for value-focussed civic architecture. The building features a mix of facilities including museum, café, library, Wakefield Metropolitan District Council One-Stop-Shop and civic offices, arranged around a public atrium. Wakefield One is part of the Worksmart programme, designed to rationalise the Council’s estate from 36 buildings to 12 helping the Council to achieve savings in excess of £1m per year from shared facilities, releasing other sites for future redevelopment.

The CAT A development, designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects, and built by Morgan Sindall, will provide new 123,000 sq ft office accommodation for 1200 staff and has been designed to deliver a flexible space that allows for the evolution of the building over time. The interior was designed by NPS Property and fitted out by ISG. Burmatex^® worked closely with NPS to realise their design inspirations.

Burmatex^® were approached in September 2011 to create a unique and original carpet tile for this flagship project. Wakefield Council was keen to have an original and contemporary product to fit into the forward-looking building.

With its expertise in designing carpet tiles, Burmatex^® proposed a unique product, mixing visual impact, quality and performance.

wick, the finished product was supplied in two striking greys enabling clear zoning throughout. The rich texture and contrasting tones of wick was highlighted by the quarter turn installation.

Custom green and purple accent strips match the Wakefield Council branding to bring colour into the installation.
