BURMATEX STEM DAY 2018

Last week, for the second year in a row, we ran a STEM enrichment workshop with local school children at Whitcliffe Mount High School in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire. We were invited back to the school by Ahead Partnership who run a series of programmes for young people aimed at creating a link between education and employers. The ‘Make the Grade’ programme that we took part in highlights the importance of STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering and maths in workplace roles and we designed the workshop to highlight the use of these subjects here at burmatex. Our team included a mix of burmatex employees from both sales and design roles, so that we could answer questions about the different aspects of the business and highlight the importance of having people with different skills, working together, to enable collaboration and innovation.

It was great to see how the students took to the task of designing a carpet tile plan for an office revamp and the way it really brought them together within their teams. Some of the students even referenced the TV show ‘The Apprentice’ and offered to be the Project Manager for their group! This was very encouraging and good to see them get into their roles. One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was to hear that some of the students, who don’t usually like school, really enjoyed the day and came into their own!

Overall, we felt that it was a great way for burmatex to contribute to the local community and offer a helping hand to the young people of the future.
