CERITH WYN EVANS, FORMS IN SPACE…BY LIGHT (IN TIME)
TATE BRITAIN COMMISSION 2017
28 MARCH – 20 AUGUST 2017
The installation of white neon lights, inspired by ‘…the codified and precise movements of Japanese Noh theatre’ hangs in the Tate Britain Duveen Galleries. Starting in the south duveens, the installation can be seen from as far back as the main galley entrance. The installation begins with a simple circular neon light which then progresses into a set of three more complex neon ‘discs’ and finally expands in the north duveen galleries with a complex web of intertwined linear neon forms.
The term ‘drawing in space’, as used in the exhibition blurb, accurately describes the appearance of the installation. Almost as if somebody has taken a giant neon pen and drawn mid-air into the empty space of the gallery, the lights hang effortlessly suspended in space and time.
The truly inspirational installation provides a moment of calm whilst your mind is momentarily distracted from the hustle and bustle of everyday life outside the gallery. You can almost hear the hum of the electricity inside the bright lights, whilst you allow you mind to wander and imagine the movements at the source of the concept.
On until the 20th August, the exhibition is well worth a visit. See the Tate website for further information. Also, follow out twitter and instagram feeds, to see live updates when we're out and about.
