I recently visited the Alexander Calder ‘Performing Sculpture’ exhibition at the Tate Modern in London. The exhibition display’s a variety of different artworks by Calder and illustrates how his work developed throughout his career. There is an interesting mix of drawings, wire structures, 3D sculpture and mobiles, all of which captivate the imagination from the outset.

It was refreshing to take the opportunity to admire the 3D mobiles, as so much of my time is spent designing for flat surfaces. Photographs alone cannot convey the beauty of the structures as they turn gracefully in the air, whilst viewers stand mesmerised by the scale and impact of the ‘kinetic abstractions’.

The Tate Modern itself stands on the south bank of the River Thames in London and is a sight to behold. Before you even go in to look at the Art, I would recommend taking the time to have a walk around the outside. The interior of the gallery has a modern, industrial feel to it, and there are plenty of spots to sit and take in your surroundings.

The Tate Modern is my personal favourite gallery in London and go-to gallery whenever I’m in the area. The Alexander Calder ‘Performing Sculpture’ exhibition is open until 3rd April 2016, and I think is well worth a visit. For info and ticket prices, visit the Tate gallery website.
