STAIRS AND CARPET TILES
It is so easy to get focused on the large open areas when designing a floor scheme that the stairs can often be left to the end of the design process. An easy mistake that customers often make is in considering the stairs to be a ‘boring’ area. It is true that this is a functional area of a building, but why not take the opportunity to be creative!? A set of stairs is often the place where you can get away with doing something a bit different as part of a more conservative carpet scheme. Alternatively, it is a great place to keep it simple if you have used bold design elsewhere in the installation.
Some key points to consider for a carpet tile stair design are:
Colour
This is an opportunity to introduce a bright colour, a mix of different colours or even company brand colours.
Treads and Risers
Do you want something different on each? It may be that you want a neutral colour on the treads and some bold colour on the risers. Or do you want both to be a continuation of the overall floor pattern?
Tile Direction
Traditional level loop carpet tiles are tufted in lines and therefore, tiles which include different colours always have a stripe in them. So when cutting tiles to fit the stair treads and risers, which way do you want the stripe to go? Horizontally or vertically?
Below are a few examples of the different approaches you can take to carpet tile stair design and how you can link the look of your stairs to your overall scheme.
